The best part of living here is the Magic Castle where for six years he lived within one mile of the Castle and three of those years he lived directly across the street. It is where he met long time friends Larry Jennings, Bill Goodwin, Deane Stern and Ray Kosby. The timing couldn’t have been better. It was at a time when on a nightly basis it was common to have a list of who's who in the main bar area. He recalls one night when it hit him. "I looked around and saw Dai Vernon, Larry Jennings, Charlie Miller, Max Maven, Peter Pit, Johnny Platt, Tony Giorgio, Bruce Cervon, Eugene Burger, Albert Goshman, Billy McComb, and Johnny Thompson, and I realized I was in the middle of what at one time I had only read about. I absorbed that moment."

It was at the Castle where he was performing for some guests in the main bar area that he caught the eye of a Japanese magician, who after seeing Alfonso perform handed him a questioner in English asking if he would like to go to Japan to lecture. Thirty days later he was in Japan doing a 3-city tour and a television appearance.

About a year later Alfonso was in the Castle talking with magicians and at about midnight, a guy walks in and starts to perform some blow-away magic. The amazing magician was Juan Tamariz. He and Alfonso hit it off right away. They closed the Castle and went to the lobby of his hotel and continued jamming till after 5am. The next night was the same. The following year he was invited to Spain by Juan to lecture in three cities and attend the Escorial. (The Escorial is an elite, invitation-only magicians' conference where the invitees spend two or three days discussing a major and minor topic in magic that they have researched during the previous year).
